[Kernel Panic 3.0] SmartHjelm – making cycling safe again

With SmartHjelm, we will revolutionise cycling and make it the a of transportation for the future! SmartHjelm will both make your journey more pleasant and more safe. And, if the worst should happen and you get in an accident, it has built in emergency handling features to get help and figure out what happened after the fact.

The SmartHjelm consist of multiple high-tech devices that communicate together for an optimal helmet experience. See the diagram below:

Solution so far

Rear raspberry Pi with all attached components
Native iOS application backend system. The app is mostly used for visuazisation of sensordata, most notably the rear view camera. The app is also able to activate the turn signal routine
Controller for controlling the LED matrix on the back of the helment. Each action has different method of activation, the turn signals are activate by the user while the break light system is automaticly triggered when the user is breaking. Each action will trigger an animation on the LED matrix, play audio through the integrated speakers and lasty send a message to the phone app to visulize the current action
Front camera object detection system. A second raspberry pi will be mounted in the front with a camera pointing forward. This camera is used to detected objects ahead such as stops signs, red lights and possible slippery conditions. Google Cloud Vision API is used for the actuall detection. To make your journey more pleasant, our helmet has

  • a “Startup routine”: Morning news, weather forecast and traffic information
  • a digital rear view mirror
  • alerting about potentially slippery roads
  • info about safe speeds if going too fast

To make your journey safer, it has:

  • a bell controlled by button and voice – visual and audible (in local language) alerts
  • automatic braking light and sound, triggered by braking or stop light detection
  • voice controlled turn signal: audio and light

In case of an accident, our helmet has

  • visual and audible alerts to the local environment
  • “black box” functionality: helmet stores data (camera, sound, position, motion etc.) in case of an accident
  • alerts on social media
