Every new parent has been there, in the state of complete sleep deprivation. Your newborn is supposed to sleep up to 17 hours per day, but you quickly realize that that is in one or two hour intervals, meaning you get no sleep at all. It makes you realize that the quote “sleeping like a baby” makes no sense whatsoever. And as you drive around the block one more time in hope of the little darling falling asleep you can’t help but think: “There’s got to be a better way”. Well, we are here to tell you that there is!
ModernFamily by Babyshark Ultd. is developing a new product for all those sleep deprived parents out there! The iCrib will help rock your baby to sleep to the sound of sweet lullabies. It will also provide you with baby monitoring features of the highest quality such as night and day camera monitoring, cry alerts, temperature alarms and notifications of needed diaper changes – all through a convenient mobile application.
Using Arduinos and Raspberry PI’s, this crib will be loaded with all the features any new parent needs. Let me walk you through them.
At bedtime, a simple push of a button will start the sleep program. The crib will start rocking and soothing music will emerge from the speakers. Through the night camera, you can watch your baby even when it is dark in the room. When the sun rises, a light sensor activates the day camera for continuous monitoring.
A baby’s cry can mean many things. With our machine learning algorithms, we will analyse your baby’s cry and tell you the reason behind it. Our sound sensors will alert you when your child is awake and you can choose to start the sleep program automatically from your phone or start the baby mobile to help keep them entertained while you wake up and get out of bed.
One temperature sensor will tell you the room temperature and another is embedded in the mattress and will give an indication of the baby’s temperature. There is also a water sensor in the mattress that will let you know if there was a larger accident than normal during the night…
All data will be stored in Google cloud, the mobile app will give you instant values and camera feed while a cloud dashboard will give you statistics over time.
Since an infants wellbeing is of the utmost importance, we make sure that that both the sensor feed, and the control instructions, is handled by completely separated hardware and software pipelines. This ensures that the parent is is able to turn on a soothing lullaby in the case where the sensor stream is malfunctioning and visa versa.
Our sensor data is collected through an Arduino which sends the data to a Raspberry Pi. From there on the data is formatted as messages and sent to the Pub/Sub topic. Each of the messages is then inserted by a Cloud Function to a Cloud SQL database. The data is now available for both the Analytics Dashboard and the handy iCrib mobile app. On the mobile app the parent can then easily view state of the infant if wanted give further instructions to the iCrib.
